With all this talk about health insurance there are a few things that I think you should know. Many people have no idea about what to look for when they are looking to purchase health insurance. It is for this reason that I thought I would share some tips that I found useful when I purchased my first policy.

First talk to your employer and see if the company offers any type of health insurance. This may be a great option. However, if the company you work for does not offer insurance it is time to look for the plan somewhere else.

It is important to understand your needs when it comes to insurance. Do you need it for just you or the whole family? Are there any special needs that need to be met for your family? Once you understand the needs of your family you can move forward.

For me there were no special needs and it was just me and my wife. The next thing I did was looked at our medical needs. My wife and I got in the car and saw a doctor and he told us we were both healthy. This helped us to get the correct coverage.

I started to get quotes from as many companies as I could. The next thing I did was review all of the plans and see what the insurance covered and left behind. We took into consideration the out of pocket costs and the co-pay for the term of the policy. I took a look at the policies I liked and when I was ready I purchased the one that I felt suited my needs. In the end it came down to a personal choice based on my needs and that was a  California medicare supplement policy.

Remember to cancel any policy that you do not want to keep. Read the information and they will tell you what the grace period is. These tips have worked for me and I am sure that they will work for you too.
